BIOLUMINESCENCE:
The light produced by a living organism through various chemical reactions that occur within its own body is called Bioluminescence.
OCCURRENCE OF BIOLUMINESCENCE:
Bioluminescence occurs when Oxygen reacts with Luciferin, a chemical molecule and produces light. Many organism use Luciferase, which speeds up the chemical reaction. Both in Marine and Land there are a vast variety of organism which are Bioluminescence in nature. In Marine Jellyfish, Sea stars and a vast variety of fish are some examples, In Land Firefly, glow worms, few varieties of fungi, are some examples. A type of Plankton named Dinoflagellates sometimes cause ocean to sparkle at night.
FIREFLY:
One of the most commonly known Bioluminescent organism is Firefly, which produces light by reacting Oxygen with Calcium and Luciferine. There are about 2000 different species of Fireflies which have unique patterns of lighting, the light emitted by the firefly help them to escape from its enemies, These Fireflies have a total lifespan of about 2 months. The most interesting fact is that we don't know how these Fireflies would on and off their lights.
